Expanding literacies for the contemporary world: a checklist

This is a checklist that can be used to ensure that an educational approach fosters the key literacies – digital, visual, information, media, cultural, critical, and collaborative – helping learners navigate and engage with the modern world.
1. Digital literacy
- Teach learners how to use digital tools and platforms effectively.
- Include lessons on online safety, privacy, and data security.
- Encourage critical evaluation of online information and sources.
- Promote ethical use of technology and digital communication.
2. Visual literacy
- Help learners interpret and analyse images, infographics, and videos.
- Discuss how visuals can influence emotions, ideas, and perceptions.
- Encourage learners to create their own visual content (e.g. posters, videos).
- Teach learners how to use design elements like colour, composition, and symbolism effectively.
3. Information literacy
- Instruct learners on how to find reliable and credible information from various sources.
- Teach research skills, including how to differentiate between factual information, misinformation, disinformation and malinformation.
- Discuss the ethical use of information, such as citing sources and avoiding plagiarism.
- Include lessons on data interpretation and decision-making based on credible information.
4. Media literacy
- Encourage learners to critically analyse media messages in advertisements, news, and social media.
- Discuss media ownership, control, and bias in media representation.
- Teach learners to recognise how media can shape public opinion and culture.
- Use case studies to explore real-world media impact (e.g. political campaigns, social movements).
5. Cultural literacy
- Incorporate lessons on different cultural practices, values, and worldviews
- Foster respect for diversity by discussing cross-cultural communication and collaboration.
- Encourage learners to reflect on their own cultural identity and how it shapes their perspectives.
- Create opportunities for learners to engage with people or content from diverse cultures.
6. Critical literacy
- Help learners analyse how language and media can reinforce power structures and societal norms.
- Promote questioning of dominant narratives and encourage exploration of multiple perspectives.
- Foster discussions about social justice and equity in the context of media and texts.
- Encourage learners to critically engage with current events and societal issues.
7. Collaborative literacy
- Facilitate group projects where learners collaborate to create and interpret content.
- Teach communication and teamwork skills for effective collaboration.
- Encourage peer feedback and collective problem-solving activities.
- Use digital tools that support collaboration, such as shared documents and online discussion platforms.
General tips
- Integrate real-world examples, user experiences, and case studies to make literacies relevant.
- Adapt teaching strategies to different age groups and learning styles.
- Regularly assess each learners progress in developing these literacies through practical exercises.
- Encourage ongoing reflection on how these literacies apply to daily life and future challenges.
This checklist serves as a guide to create a well-rounded educational experience that equips learners with the essential literacies for active and informed participation in today’s world.
