Encouraging democratic participation among both formal and non-formal education professionals needs a well-rounded approach that combines technical expertise with personal qualities. Having education and knowledge is important, but having the right mindset and attitude is equally essential. The following is a streamlined strategy to effectively promote democratic engagement.
Developing awareness and understanding
- Educational workshops:
Conduct workshops to explore democratic principles, civic engagement, and the role of education. Use these sessions to illustrate the importance of integrating democratic values into teaching practices. - Case studies and best practices:
Share successful examples of how various educators have promoted democratic participation, highlighting effective strategies and their impact on learners.
Enhancing facilitation skills
- Facilitation training:
Provide training on effective discussion and debate facilitation. Focus on creating safe spaces for diverse viewpoints and teaching conflict management skills. - Conflict management:
Equip professionals with strategies to handle conflicting opinions and sensitive topics, ensuring respectful and productive dialogues.
Fostering civic engagement opportunities
- Community partnerships:
Collaborate with local organisations to offer educators opportunities for civic involvement, such as volunteering or advocacy work. - Action projects:

Leveraging Erasmus+ and other programmes for support
